Most Asked Question for CAT, CET, GATE Preparation

Q) How does a post-graduate degree help while applying for jobs

A)
In today’s age of globalization a graduate degree alone is not enough for making a student industry ready from a career perspective. In this extremely competitive, knowledge economy driven era, the best way to stand out among your peers is to acquire a post-graduate degree, either in a technical field or in management.

A post-graduate degree is usually considered more favorably not only at the time of recruitment but also during periodical appraisals. It helps an individual rise up the hierarchical ladder, within an organization, much more quickly and easily.

Researchers, who look at trends in human resource development and employment opportunities, estimate that higher education is also linked with higher earning capacity. Post graduation is the need of the hour because it helps one to elevate ones personal as well as professional growth.

Q) What does it take to build a good career what are the options for higher studies post graduation in engineering

A)
Identify your specific area of interest after you complete your degree. Technical or management areas are widely considered by engineers looking to acquire a post-graduate degree.
You will have to appear for a competitive entrance exam before getting an admission to any of the prestigious colleges for any programme.

If you want to pursue a successful career in a technical field, you have to appear for the GATE (graduate aptitude test for engineering) conducted by the IITs.A good score at GATE increases your chances of acquiring admission not only into IITs and NITs but also various prestigious colleges across the country.

A valid GATE score is also an eligibility criterion for recruitment by public sector undertakings like BARC,BHEL, NTPC, IOCL, etc.

Likewise, for a management degree, the CAT (Common Aptitude Test),held by the IIMs, is conducted across India to select students for admission to the IIMs and also 150+ good B-schools across India.

MHTCET (common entrance test) is held by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) for admission into all management colleges in Maharashtra.

Q) When should one appear for GATE - during ones last year of engineering or post graduation

A)
The GATE tests your concepts, their application and problem solving abilities based on the syllabus studied during engineering. You should appear for GATE preferably during the final year of engineering and not after completion of engineering degree as it will be much easier to prepare for the exam while your engineering syllabus is still fresh in your mind. Secondly, appearing for the GATE during your engineering will also save you time.

Q) Why is a post graduation in management considered a best option for engineering students

A)
A management degree gives one more exposure in business related areas. This is not a part of any other graduate degree including engineering. In fact for engineers a management degree also gives an added qualification; that of Techno Managers, which helps them considerably in terms of career options and growth prospects.

Graduates, be they from engineering or any other stream, are typically specialized in one field. In an organization, it is essential that a candidate has exposure to multiple aspects in order to move up the hierarchical ladder faster. This is possible if an engineer or any graduate has a broader spectrum of job profile to bring a beneficial change in the organization. Hence, any graduate with a management degree is often given more preference at the time of recruitment.

Q) When should I start preparing for competitive entrance exams like GATE/ CAT/ CET

A) Ideally the pre-final year is the right time to start preparing for these competitive exams as the final year is hectic due to project submissions and vivas. Add to it, the pressure of maintaining a first class score.

Most competitive exams are generally scheduled from October to February. So unless you start preparing for these competitive exams much early, your preparation will overlap with the revision for the university exams.
